Cosmic Panda – Where YouTube Is Going And How You Can Respond

Posted by Paul Colligan on Thursday, July 7, 2011

Cosmic Panda is “a new experimental experience for videos, playlists and channels” at YouTube.

It’s, in short, a look at where they’re going (before they totally go there) with a chance to both comment on what’s happening and figure out what this means to your YouTube Strategy.

Below is a quick video walkthrough I did of Cosmic Panda. If you can’t see it embedded, the link will take you right to the page.

As per the video, many of you will need to change your background images and consider the implications of (at this point at least) no autoplay on Channel Pages and the inability to scamper through subscriber and friend pages for audience development type activities.

But I do like that YouTube is making this “preview” of Cosmic Panda available for all of us to plan against.

What are your thoughts on this cute little bear?

I don’t like the panda – too cutesy, and my initial thought on seeing the panda was that this was something coming from China.

So is this the end of TubeToolbox and the end of “Friends” on YouTube?

  • Halfrican

my friends list is gone wtf

How about what it does – not the codename?

Looks like YouTube is making some changes …

Don’t know – but certainly something I want to track here.

Thanks for the video tour Paul. I think I will go and have a play with it as it will impact our training programs for the future. Looks cool – just have to figure out the best way to maximize the new layout from a YouTube business marketing perspective and engagement. Cheers Pam.

    Thanks Paul. Great content.
Do you have a favorite software that you use to change spoken words on videos to written documents (transcribing I guess???)
    thanks Paul

Wow – first off, all of my video descriptions and tags have disappeared on all of my videos – that’s not good!  No more lists of friends and very few subscribers.  This may kill Tube Toolbox.  No autoplay of video on channel, not good either.  This may seriously impact YouTube as a search engine, which may be their intention. And how does Google+ fit into this equation.  I haven’t received my invite yet.  Any thoughts?

I use Dragon Naturally Speaking.  It works pretty good.

    Thanks!

I hire that out. Computers just can’t do that yet.

In terms of the Google+ invite, I just added your name to the list. In terms of the death of Tube Toolbox, those guys are pretty smart. In terms of them impacting YouTube as a search engine – NO WAY – they want YouTube as the search engine.

Great walk through – thanks Paul.
