I think it's messaging for what I call the 140 generation. It doesn't need to be an email killer because young people will kill email themselves over time. This is a slow play for Facebook, which is very smart. Sometimes you don't need to completely disrupt; just ride the wave.

Which is what I think they're doing a perfect job at.

100m people using Facebook from their mobile phones so integrating 'email' for the 140 generation is a logical next step

i agree – but i've been running traditional email from my phone for years.

I don't know if it's totally email 2.0 but I would definitely say it is social email 1.0 (in a true universal way anyway). Many companies and professionals would still use email as a means for official communications. I feel that what this system Facebook is rolling out, is making it easier for people to socialize with each other.

I have my current facebook mail set to notifications on my phone, but I also have all my email addresses on my phone as well. I use company specific domains for official communications while I use my gmail account for person ones. What this system would do is allow me to offload more of my social interactions to facebook instead of using gmail and facebook (I correspond socially on both, and frankly use facebook mail more for social personal communication)

    Awesome.

Yes, they will provide it, But I'll not use it, really facebook is facebook, my email is my email. different things. it's my opinion.

and the cool thing is – you can keep using what you're using – but now you can use it to people who only want im, sms, or that kind of nonsense.
