Oprah Doesn’t Need CBS – Do You?

by Paul Colligan on November 9, 2009

CBS is scared. They heard the rumor (I’m sure you did too) that Oprah might be moving from them to her “OWN” network (perfect name) and, well, the offers should get really interesting.

Sit back for a second and move past the inevitable bidding war that is about to happen. Ponder this simple fact:

Oprah doesn’t need CBS anymore.

A few days ago I wanted to catch the online replay of “V.” I couldn’t, for the life of me, remember (or care) what network it was on. A flagship major play during sweeps month for a network and I couldn’t associate one with the other. Is ABC the winner, or is “V?” I think we know the answer. Yes, I had to look up the association to write this piece.

And, of course, with Hulu, 3 of the 4 networks are there so I jumped over and found my fix. You know my feelings on the future of that little site but while she lasts, I’ll continue to enjoy the ride. At this point, Hulu matters more than ABC, NBC, or FOX.

If you took the top 20 new media entities on the planet and offered them a gig at a “real” media company, I predict, sadly, that 18 of them would take the job. Now at the pay some of them are getting I understand the initial reaction, but the facts are simple: they don’t need “real” media to get somewhere.

You don’t need CBS either.

Based on the recommendation of Lynn Terry during last week’s Internet Marketing This Week, I picked up Socialnomics (affiliate link) on my Kindle (amazing book, review to come). In the book, @equalman examines the social media efforts of a number of huge brands: Coke, Jet Blue, ESPN, CC Chapman, etc.

CC Chapman – a “huge” brand?

He gets equal play in the book.

He deserves equal play in the book.

He’s as important to the story as is ESPN.

He is the (new) media.

So are you.

The shows and people and characters I love in this space can all be found with this little site called “Google.” Heck, most of them can even be found on another site called “Bing.” I don’t need an aggregator or network or commercial series to remind me that Cali Lewis is going to keep me up to date with geek news or that Chris Brogan might have something interesting to say. They’re bookmarked, I follow them in my reader, and if for any reason a site went down or a feed died (“or they jumped to another network”) it wouldn’t be hard at all to figure out where they went.

If Oprah leaves CBS (please do, Oprah), she has this little billboard in every stinking grocery store called “O Magazine” that would make it very easy to tell others where she went. Oh yeah, I bet you Google (and possibly even Bing) might serve the purpose as well. Oprah is the story, not CBS.

You are the story.

You are the media.

Oprah doesn’t need CBS.

Neither do you.

So what Paul?

Yeah, but Paul, I’m not Oprah!

Neither am I.

Neither is CC Chapman.

Neither are the other 4 point whatever billion people on the planet.

We are in an exciting new era where the good stuff rises to the top, without the need for a network to promote it. That’s why I love this space so much – and I hope why you read this blog.

You spend your time on creating content that rises to the top and, one day soon, you’ll be able to turn down CBS’s offer.

Just like Oprah.

If you like vanilla, avoid-all-conflict content that is veiled in heavy doses of pure self serving nothingness, then CC is the person to listen to. There's a point that was cut-n-pasted from somewhere else, in there somewhere.
  • So glad you enjoyed the book. Socialnomics ROCKS! Look forward to seeing you talk Erik Qualman into joining us on the IMTW Podcast ;)
  • CC: Of course you are in the book...I was hoping you'd stumble upon it (no pun intended). Keep up the great work!
  • Paul you switched to thesis? WOW. I recently did my 200th episode and looked around and saw the dust of the yahoo podcast directory, podcast station software, mix craft live software, and other items that "podfaded" since 2005. I also counted 10 podcasts about pocasting that are (in some cases) not even on the planet anymore. With a network you get a boost of exposure, but the bottom line is - if the content isn't any good (remember the Chevy Chase late night talk show?) that network will sink you as well. Good job CC!
  • The move to Thesis is an interesting one. That will be the point of a blog post as well - it wasn't for the reasons one would think.

And, yes Dave, the content rises to the top!

Hey, Paul, excellent article. I'm building my own multimedia empire and it's really inspirational to realize that at some point I won't need to accept an offer from CBS. It was my goal to start a show and get it on a network, but I've taken the initiative and started it in the new media/online space. Isn't it great when we have absolutely everything we need to be successful? All we have to do is follow through with our dreams. Thanks for the uplifting, informational, and inspirational post!
  • Rod,

You don't EVER have to take the offer from CBS.

    Glad I could inspire.

Interesting article Paul. Kind of funny that they didn't call up CC for the book, but I guess with his SM footprint and presentations one could build up a decent case study on him. The book should be an interesting read that I'll check out through your link.
  • I really surprised they didn't contact CC either. For two reason: 1) WHAT A GOOD FRIEND TO HAVE IN THIS SPACE and 2) seems like common courtesy - specially for a book about this kinda thing.

Don't let that take anything away from it though. The book is amazing.

Thanks for the aff link as well, gave a great deal.
  • I wonder how the Nielson ratings people will handle HTPC people? That is, if Hulu has any kind of viewership statistics? I haven't looked - I assume you're a user of the service... But what about people who get their programs from other sources, non-unified media? I watch a lot of TV on CTV.ca and anywhere I can get online episodes - and what I can't I get other ways. But it's worth wondering what the networks will do if Oprah goes.

We've been watching this for the last year and a bit with newspapers. Big names and content creators dropping off to go rogue, as it were - and papers shutting down because no one cares about them any more. I wonder if the networks will act surprised when they start losing Big Content of its own accord, and they become the vessels of nothing of consequence. What will be left? Shock and reality TV? Because shock gets old fast.
  • I don't think Nielson can use the old metrics to rate this new media.
  • Paul,
I believe you have said it all. I've just finished a great book called Blog, by Hugh Hewitt, and event though i don't agree with his political concepts, I must say that the book captures the spirit of the new media: it's us.

Oprah may be going solo 'cause she's finally found out she's bigger than CBS, and like you said I hope she does. She's formed her own network, and I'm talking about a more important network, which is not a TV one. She's built a network of people who love her, and that is impossible to put a price on. This network is able to move people and promote the real idea of community.

Since blogs were created, we have an arena to express our feelings and tell the majors sometimes they do go wrong. I do believe in the social media era, but we must care for the content we produce. Otherwise, we'll still be acting like boys having fun at a playground.

    Greetings from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.
  • A "network of people who love us" - who could ask for more?
  • fabiocarvalho
But that's not something that happens overnight. It took Oprah a while to build that network.
  • No wait, let me rephrase that, I love @cc_chapman! Added the underscore and the exclamation point. Now it's perfect. :)
  • Who don't love CC?
  • I love @ccchapman. :)
  • Yes, do check out the book - awesome. Very surprised @equalman didn't contact you about it. This is the first book I've read about Social Media that has so deeply and completely messed with my mind/head/business.
  • What? I'm in this book? Guess I need to check it out because I have NO idea what you are talking about. Thanks for the heads up.
