File Naming Is More Important Than Ever For Podcasts

As mentioned earlier, you can now view the traditionally formatted video Podcasts on your Xbox.

As hinted at earlier, it is still a mess.

And, honestly, I don’t now how big any audience minus the uber geek set (and as much as I love us, there is more to the world than us) is going to get as a result. It’s that bad.

But, we have something to learn here.

The interface is sloppy – both from interface design, and the ways by which is pulls the files.

It lists the files in order of file names.

So, for instance episode 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 would be listed as 1, 10, 2, 3, 4, etc.

I predict you’ll see more systems like this in the future.

So, … you need a file naming system for your Podcast that will work on sloppy and/or cheap systems.

Here is how I do it.

XXX-YYYY-MM-DD

XXX is the three digit code for my Podcast. Marketing Online Live is MOL. Podcast Tools is PCT. You get the idea.

YYYY is the year. Four digit. We learned enough from Y2K.

MM is month. Always two digit – i.e., January is 01.

DD is day. Also, always two digits.

There ain’t a system out there that I don’t know of where this won’t work. If I’m missing anything, please let me know.

    Excellent. Thank you. I’d figured this was important and sort of noticed how you did the file naming on Podcast Secrets, but this makes it explicit and extra clear. Exactly what minds like mine need!
