Premium Video Podcasting Takes Small Baby Step – Brightcove Network Launched

Posted by Paul Colligan on Monday, October 30, 2006

Brightcove launched their “Brightcove Network.” You got almost everything in this package: add supported videos, pay for download, even syndication at AOL Video.

Of course, I have to wonder, what happened to the promised Tivo integration?

Almost everything? No RSS integration that I could find. Am I the only one that wants the stuff I pay for pushed to my PMP so I can watch when and where I want?

One interesting element is that the “DVD quality” versions are delivered via Windows DRM.

Do I smell Zune integration one day?

Zune will get focused on Movies also. Who knows maybe in the Zune Marketplace we will soon find also movies to buy.

    Hi Paul,
    Thanks for covering our launch!

You can find Brightcove content from The New York Times on your broadband-connected Series 2 Tivo. Simply go to “Showcases and TV Guide” and click on the New York Times logo to subscribe to daily videos. While Tivo distribution is not available to everyone, we’re happy to consider publishers that consistently produce high-quality content with broad appeal. We’ll have more publishers available on Tivo soon, so keep checking the Showcase area.

You can subscribe to any Brightcove player by clicking the RSS link in the sharing menu. Of course, we’re also adding richer RSS integration into the Brightcove.com consumer destination site.

Our industry-standard Windows Media DRM supports portable devices. Unfortunately, most portable devices cannot playback DVD-quality WMV files so publishers have the option of encoding a smaller portable version instead. We’re fully committed to making this process more seamless for publishers as well as consumers in the coming months.

    Cheers!
    -Sean

    Sean,

Thrilled to cover the launch. You guys are doing great!

I’m a little hurt that you’d not give me your email address in this posting but I guess I’ve been burned enough by spam to understand. Would love to interview you all about what you are going.

I’ve got a Tivo and am getting the NYT stuff. What I want it a world where my stuff can be purchased and viewed on the Tivos of my customers. When is that coming?

    Paul
