Podcast Tip Jars Anyone Successful With It?

Posted by Paul Colligan on Friday, August 25, 2006

In prepping for my presentation at Podcast Expo, I’m considering a short discussion of Podcast tip/donation jars.

Has anyone had any success with a tip jar at their Podcast? Give me some real numbers and I’ll tell your story, and tell a few thousand (remember, this thing will be archived online) about your Podcast.

Sound fair?

Doug Kaye did that with ITConversations for quite a while – he’d probably have some good info…

I’ve emailed Mike asking for some details. We’ll see what they offer.

    Paul,

When I first began my show, I had no expectations. 6 Months in to the thing I had recieved, perhaps $100 through a donations button. After that, however, things slowly began to pick up. I offered a downloadable cookbook which generated quite a bit of cash–even though I offered it for free. And I constantly recieve non-monetary gifts from listeners who know I’ll appreciate the items they send–specialty pasta, cooking tools, spices, cookbooks, as well as donations. Some of the items have come from across the world.

Can I make a living on it? Not at the moment, but I don’t market the show all that heavily. It sits in a small-ish niche. It pays for itself, which is better than I ever expected. And I’ve met some amazing people who are fans. So, a donations button is cool, but opening up the income stream to other items and being receptive to it has been more “profitable” for me.

I tried it briefly after last year’s PME, based on what Leo Laporte said (if every listener only gave two dollars!!1!). Got a grand total of about two donations, took it down.
