Is Microsoft’s “Ten” a True Video Podcast?

by Paul Colligan on March 13, 2006

So, Microsoft launches (or at least someone at Microsoft launches) 10 (on10.net).

I was going to ask what it had to do with Microsoft until I watched the KEXP Radio piece. Guess who runs on IIS (Microsoft’s Internet Information Server)? Nice, simple, effective, subtle. Good move.

People are making a big deal out of the fact they the offer QuickTime downloads of the video files. If they want the iPod market (is there any other?), they have no choice.

Of course, someone might want to tell Microsoft that they should submit their Podcast to the iTunes directory.

Because, let’s be honest, that cool Ajaxy Subscribe button that only offers XML when you select iPod will bring you a lot more subscribers (heck, any) when you have a simple iTunes URL.

  • So p'raps a better post title would have been "Is Microsoft's Ten a Smart Video Podcast"? ;-)

Just giving you a hard time. I understand the benefits of playing devil's advocate. :-) Rock on!
  • Duncan, thanks for the post. Would love to do an interview with someone over there if you're game.

Actually, Josh, I'm saying that if you aren't listed in the Apple Directory, you're certainly not a smart video Podcast.

In terms of the whole "real" thing - trying to stoke a little fire under this post:

  • So you're saying that unless you're listed in the Apple directory, you're not a real video podcast? ;-)

Sure, being listed there will bring you traffic, and it makes it easier for n00bs to sub when there's an iTunes button, but I'd hardly call those requirements to be called a video podcast.

To me, video file + enclosure in an RSS 2.0 feed = video podcast.
  • Hey Paul, we will add an iTunes URL... the feed is submitted but we were launching a semi-secretive mode and didn't submit it until we launched so we went with the real RSS link as a start.

    Thanks!
