We Disagree with Steve Rubel in Marketing Online Live #27

Posted by Paul Colligan on Wednesday, March 8, 2006

In the latest episode of Marketing Online Live, we actually argue with the mighty Steve Rubel’s argument that “The door has officially closed on email marketing.

We think, if anything, it opens the door wider for those of us who use email (legitimately) to market.

After listening, I’d be curious to know, who do you think is right?

Is below what you are trying to link to?

Bye Bye Email Marketing, Hello RSS
Saul Hansell at the New York Times reports that America Online and Yahoo are about to start using a system that gives preferential treatment to messages from companies that pay from 1/4 of a cent to a penny each to have them delivered. AOL and Yahoo will still accept e-mail from others, but the paid messages will be given special treatment. (Update: Rebecca Leib notes in comments that ClickZ broke this earlier in the week.)

That’s all folks. The door has officially closed on email marketing. Maybe this will drive more companies to start up opt-in RSS feeds and blogs that facilitate dialogue.

I thought I would be able to read the argument cuz when I click on Marketing Online Live it takes me to Meet iTunes – download now page.

How do I easily either read or listen to the argument?

    Paul,

I don’t think there is a right or wrong on this issue, but personally I don’t subscribe to any email marketing lists because of privacy issues. I subscribe to your RSS feed. If you have something that appeals to me(and you usually do) then I read your postings. You can market your services (as you do) on your blog. I don’t find that invasive. My email is reserved for my personal and business correspondence.

    Lenny,

Great to hear from you sir.

I know your stand, but this is one you had long before AOL suggested an email tax, etc. Rubel’s comment was that this finally kills email marketing. We suggest, if anything, it only makes it more powerful.

    Mike,

I’ll put up a click to listen button for this one for you.
